You Won’t Be Out Cold (Unless You Want To Be!)

Sedation Dentistry St. Charles

Does your heart start pounding at the mere thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you drive by a dental practice?

Many men and women who have improved their smiles with cosmetic dentistry or underwent extensive restoration services chose to use sedation. Though the terms ‘sleep dentistry’ and ‘oral conscious sedation’ are generally used interchangeably, they are not identical. Let’s examine the three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Nitrous Oxide
The first level uses nitrous oxide, or ‘laughing gas’ as it is frequently called. Nitrous oxide has been used in cosmetic dental offices for many years because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the procedure, but wears off quickly after the mask is pulled off. If you need a little help to get through dental procedures, but don’t want to be knocked out cold, nitrous may be the ideal choice.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as quickly as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications, however, do not usually lead to complete unconsciousness. Thus, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are used in ‘conscious’ sedation. Two of the most prevalent sedatives used by Florissant dentists are diazepam and triazolam.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery and results in true ‘sleep dentistry.’ Most patients are oblivious to what is going on in their mouth. IV sedation is often used for services such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions, and multi-procedure smile makeovers. (The sedation will wear off shortly after the procedure, so you won’t need a handsome prince’s kiss to wake you up.)

Inlays/Onlays: Less Invasive Than Complete Crowns

cosmetic dental Florissant

Restorative dentistry has advanced significantly over the years and there are now several effective ways to fix decayed teeth. In today’s post, we are going to focus on two similar types of restorations: dental inlays and onlays.

Where possible, an inlay or an onlay can be a less-invasive alternative to a complete crown and either one is usually more affordable than a porcelain crown procedure.

Inlays/onlays are “indirect fillings,” meaning that they are produced in a lab and placed whole on the tooth. A traditional “direct filling” is applied to the tooth while the material is malleable and then shaped by the dentist.

An inlay is used to fix the surface of a damaged tooth, commonly to fill a small cavity or a natural pit that is at risk for decay.

Typically porcelain or composite resin is used for inlays; these materials are heavy-duty and look very natural because the color can be matched precisely to the surrounding teeth. An inlay is exactly fitted to your tooth and looks, feels, and functions as the initial tooth.

An onlay covers a larger part of the tooth. Because they cover such a large area of the tooth, they are often referred to as partial crowns. Onlays are usually applied to the biting surface of the tooth. Just like inlays, they are exactly fitted to the damaged part of the tooth. Composite resin and porcelain are also the main materials used to create an onlay. As mentioned before, inlays and onlays serve a key role in restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

At Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS, we provide exceptional dental care including inlays and onlays. If you have one or more teeth that has a cavity, crack, or excessive wear, call 205-933-0323 to make an appointment today.

Our Team Takes Care of Your Child

At Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS, each dental professional on our team helps us operate smoothly and provide a high standard of care. Today’s message will focus on the duties of a dental assistant.

You possibly think of the dental assistant as: “The one who suctions my mouth while the dentist is working on me,” or “The one who puts the bib around my neck,” and you are correct. However, their knowledge of patient care and dental lab procedures is probably more extensive than you might realize.

Competent dental assistants work behind the scenes at Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS. They assist Dr. Martin Buchheit during all dental procedures including basic oral examinations, tooth prep, and cavity filling. Our competent assistants also work with our dental hygienists during dental cleanings and patient instruction.

When a patient arrives for their appointment, the dental assistant has already been preparing for the necessary procedure. Before they are escorted to a chair in one of our comfortable patient rooms, the assistant has made sure the room is ready.

Whether your child is receiving porcelain veneers, undergoing a routine orthodontia adjustment, our dental assistant has set the stage for a comfortable and efficient procedure.

At Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS, infection control is always foremost in our minds. Our dental assistants, dentists, and hygienists are vigilant about the sterilization of dental instruments and follow strict infection control protocols. The health of our patients and employees is our highest priority.

Dental assistants may also prepare tray setups, make impressions for restorations, schedule appointments, take X-rays, and maintain patient records.

They must have an astute eye for detail and an excellent memory as they organize and stock the many different dental supplies in a typical office.

Our dental assistants help us provide outstanding pediatric dental care.

3 Behind-The-Scenes Dental Advances For Missouri

Crown lengthening St. Charles

St. Charles dental patients who have undergone a smile redesign are probably aware of the latest cosmetic dental procedures popular in the St. Louis area. These include metal-free fillings, porcelain veneers, invisible braces, implant-anchored dentures, and inlay or onlays.

Today’s St. Charles dental post focuses on some nifty dentistry advances that are used behind-the-scenes to benefit St. Charles dentists and dental patients alike.

Realtime digital images help St. Louis dentists more easily spot and treat oral problems including emerging cavities and bone recession. Digital X-Rays require far less radiation exposure and are easier to store and access.

Pinpoint-precise Diode lasers are used in myriad procedures including crown lengthening, root scaling, biopsies, root canals, teeth whitening, oral lesion removal, and treatment of dental decay. Laser procedures are easier on the patient and require shorter healing times.

Computer-aided design (CAD)  and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)  are used for many restorative procedures in St. Charles including in-office inlays or onlays and same-day crowns. St. Louis dentists who offer dental implants can use CAD or CAM technology in every phase of the dental implant procedure. CAD and CAM is used in Missouri dental laboratories to fabricate crowns, bridges, veneers, and ceramic braces.

The future of dentistry is here today. I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit. Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS is located at 2149 Charbonier Rd in Florissant. We can be reached at 205-933-0323. Ask us about:

Don’t Settle For An Unattractive Smile

Don’t Settle For An Unattractive Smile In Florissant!

No one likes to settle for less than the best, especially with something as important as your smile. At Koch Park Dental in Florissant, we have the cosmetic dentistry solutions for your smile issues.

Cosmetic dentistry refers to a group of procedures that, individually or collectively, create positive changes to your smile. One procedure, such as teeth whitening, will go along way toward upgrading your smile. Two or more gives you a complete smile makeover.

Cosmetic Procedures

The term “cosmetic dentistry” means different things to different dentists. One practice might call a dental implant cosmetic, while another will consider it restorative.

With that in mind, here are some of the more common cosmetic dentistry procedures:

  • Teeth whitening. Nothing you buy at the store can can compare to teeth whitening from a cosmetic dentist. The bleaching ingredients may be the same, but professional strength whitening far surpasses anything over-the-counter. You’ll get a dazzling new smile!
  • Porcelain veneers. Veneers are thin shells of medical-grade ceramic that are bonded to the front of your teeth. Made to match existing teeth, they can hide cracks, gaps, and other imperfections.
  • Crowns and Bridges. Dental crowns are used to repair damaged teeth by covering them like a cap. This restores them to their natural shape. A dental bridge fills the space left by a missing tooth.
  • Dental implants. Implants are state-of-the-art tooth replacement. Strictly speaking, it’s a titanium post inserted into the jaw to replace a missing tooth root. A replacement teeth is attached to the post. They look and function like natural teeth.

At Koch Park Dental in Florissant, we use cosmetic dentistry to complement the overall general and dental health of each patient. We also offer treatment for sleep apnea. Schedule an appointment with us today!

Are Dental Veneers Reversible?

prepless veneers

When people think about improving their smiles with cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers are a popular option. At Koch Park Dental in Florissant, veneers correct flaws and leave you with a magnificent smile.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of medical-grade ceramic or composite resin. We custom fit each one to go over the front part of your teeth, giving them an attractive, completely natural appearance. You can use veneers to fix stained or chipped teeth, slightly crooked teeth, or abnormally spaced teeth.

Veneers are one of the most popular options available from modern cosmetic dentistry. They are very strong, and are made to match the color and shape of your teeth.

One caveat: a thin layer of enamel must be removed from the front of each tooth being covered with a veneer, in order for them to properly adhere. Once they’re cemented in place, they are permanent. But once they are in place, you’ll have the best-looking teeth of anyone you know.

Porcelain veneers are just one of the cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Koch Park Dental in Florissant. We also offer dental implants. Call our office to schedule an appointment today!

The Koch Park Dental Guide To Veneers

porcelain veneers cost St. Louis

It’s easy to see why people love porcelain veneers. They correct a multitude of cosmetic flaws and deliver stunning results. You can get them at Koch Park Dental in Florissant.

A porcelain veneer is an extremely thin (about .5mm or 1/64 inch) shell that is permanently attached to the front of a tooth. They are custom made for each patient, and can cover chips, cracks, and stains. They can also improve the shape, size or length of a tooth.

While preparing a tooth for a veneer is less invasive than preparing a tooth for a crown, it is not a reversible procedure. A microscopically small amount of enamel must be removed to make room for the veneer. Thus, the tooth can never be restored to its original condition.

Veneers are usually placed on the most visible teeth –  center stage, so to speak. They are on display every time the patient opens their mouth. They’re great for teeth that are discolored, chipped or misshapen. They can transform your smile int one that is not only pleasing, but durable.

At Koch Park Dental in Florissant, porcelain veneers are just one of our cosmetic dentistry procedures. We also offer dental implants and a full range of dental services. Call to schedule an appointment with us today.

What A Difference! Porcelain Veneers

Same Day Smile Makeovers At Koch Park Dental - Martin L. Buchheit, DDS In FlorissantHave you ever wished a dentist could glue new pearly white covers on your existing teeth, as easily as you paint a wall in your house? Guess what? With porcelain veneers from Koch Park Dental in Florissant, it’s possible.

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently attached to your natural teeth. At Koch Park Dental, veneers are used alone and in combination with other cosmetic dentistry procedures in complete smile makeovers. Because they can repair cosmetic tooth misalignment in one visit, veneers are sometimes described as instant orthodontics.

Do veneers look like natural teeth?
Skilled dental lab artists create porcelain veneers with the color, reflective properties, and translucency of natural teeth: perfect natural teeth, that is. In addition, porcelain veneers can be fabricated in any size or shape.

Are veneers strong?
Porcelain veneers are fabricated out of extremely durable material. If you have questions about whether a veneer or dental crown is the best choice for you, talk to Martin Buchheit. Dr. Buchheit will consider the size and condition of the tooth and its position in the mouth.

How long do veneers last?
Some smile makeover patients have veneers they received over 15 years ago. (And they still look terrific!) If properly cared for, veneers can last as long as dental crowns.

Are porcelain veneers affordable?
The cost of cosmetic dental veneers at Koch Park Dental is competitive with other premium cosmetic dental practices in the Florissant area. We use the top dental lab to create our veneers and a considerable portion of the cost goes to the lab. Porcelain veneers are often less expensive than crowns and orthodontia.

For questions about porcelain veneers, call Koch Park Dental in Florissant. We also provide general dentistry.

Porcelain Veneers, A Facelift For Your Teeth?

porcelain veneers price St. Louis

Porcelain veneers are an effective and versatile cosmetic dental option. They fit over teeth to improve appearance, and are available from Koch Park Dental in Florissant.

Veneers are individual covers for the front part of teeth. They are a fantastic way to repair a myriad of tooth imperfections such as chips, stains, yellowing, unattractive shape or minimal misalignment.

Have you ever looked for a minimally-invasive facelift for a tooth without getting an entire crown? Veneers are your solution! Super-strong, tooth-colored porcelain laminate is shaped into thin shells and custom-fitted for each patient’s unique set of teeth.

How many veneers should you get? This depends on how many teeth you want to upgrade and the overall condition of your teeth. We can guide you on the most effective strategy.

The thickness, enamel color, alignment, and shape of your teeth affect the result, as well as whether you have any gum recession. Veneers are matched to your existing teeth so they will blend seamlessly, but if you are planning to treat several teeth, you definitely want to have them constructed in the same time at the lab.

The first step in the veneer process is to make a model of your teeth to work from. After that, a dental technician will use the model to fabricate the veneers to the specific size, shape, color, and quality of translucency.

Many patients wonder if veneers are as durable as their natural teeth. Though the veneer tooth-prep process weakens the tooth slightly, with proper care, veneers can last up to 15 years.

In addition to porcelain veneers, Koch Park Dental in Florissant provides general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today!
