Solutions for Missing Teeth
A denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and surrounding tissue. Dentures are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and will often improve your smile. There are two types of available dentures: complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing and partial dentures are used when some of the natural teeth remain.
Partials Denture vs. Complete Dentures
A partial denture not only replaces missing teeth, but also prevents remaining teeth from shifting.
A complete denture may be either “conventional” or “immediate.” Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, which usually takes 4–6 weeks, during which time the patient will not have teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and placed immediately after teeth have been removed, preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the gum tissues heal and shrink, the dentures will need to be adjusted.
Reasons for Needing a Denture May Include:
- Complete denture for the loss of all teeth in an arch.
- Partial denture for the loss of several teeth in an arch.
- Enhancing smile and facial tissues.
- Improving chewing, speech and digestion.
