Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, durable, shells of tooth-colored materials which cover the front surface of your teeth and improve their appearance. These dental veneer shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size and length to create a beautiful new smile. Porcelain veneers are custom made by a professional dental laboratory to ensure they are the perfect shape and color for your smile.
Porcelain Veneers Process
Getting porcelain veneers is a several step process usually requiring three trips to our restorative dentistry office – one for a consultation and two to make and apply your veneers. We’ll need to consult with you first to determine if a dental veneer would be the best plan for your smile. Little to no anesthesia is required during this procedure. Teeth are prepared for veneers by lightly buffing and shaping the tooth surface to allow for the thickness of the veneer. An impression or mold is taken of the teeth and a tooth shade (color) will be chosen by you and Dr. Martin Buchheit.
During your last visit, your teeth will be cleaned with special liquids to achieve the most durable bond. A bonding cement will then be placed between each tooth and the veneer and a special light beam is used to harden and set the bond.
You will be given care instructions for your new dental veneer. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups will lengthen the life of your veneers.
Porcelain dental veneers are routinely used to fix:
- Teeth that are discolored — either because of root canal treatment; stains from tetracycline or other drugs, excessive fluoride or other causes; or the presence of large resin fillings that have discolored the tooth
- Teeth that are worn down
- Teeth that are chipped or broken
- Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped (for example, have craters or bulges in them)
- Teeth that are too small or large
- Teeth with gaps between them (to close the space between these teeth)
As with most restorative dentistry solutions, porcelain veneers are not permanent, and they may some day need to be replaced. However they are extremely durable and will give you a beautiful, long lasting smile for many years.
