The ADA: Promoting Dental Health Since 1859

American Dental Association Florissant

Hello, thank you for visiting the Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS blog. I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit. Along with my fantastic team, I have been providing trusted dental care since 1987.

Today’s message is about the American Dental Association. You have probably seen the ADA symbol on toothpaste and floss—but what else do you know about this dental institution?

The ADA’s self-proclaimed objective is to improve the level of public oral health by supporting the dental industry through not-for-profit federal, state, and local chapters. It was formed in 1859 and is run by its members, which currently total over 160,000.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is not an endorsement of a product per se, but rather is a confirmation of the claims made by said product. Companies who want the ADA credential for a product must submit proof of rigorous scientific testing. Once submitted, the ADA re-tests the product to further verify the results. There are currently over 300 products with the ADA certification.

The ADA does more than evaluate dental products. Here are some other ways the ADA works to carry out its mission:

  • Provides resources to support dentists and their practices
  • Educates the public about oral health
  • Works to expand access to dental care
  • Offers advice on critical issues that affect the dental industry
  • Works with other organizations on scientific research projects and public health initiatives
  • Offers scholarships to dental students

What You See And What You Don’t

invisible braces St. Louis

If you have had restorations, orthodontia, or a complete smile transformation, you want people to notice the final outcome – your dazzling smile. There is a lot, however, that is going on behind the scenes. Today’s post talks about three vital smile makeover components that are not readily apparent when you smile, but are often necessary for the successful result.

Invisible Braces
Not everyone in Florissant wants to flash a metal smile while their teeth are being straightened. Invisible braces keep your secret safe because it is nearly impossible to see them while they are being worn.

White Fillings

If you have metal fillings, you might be interested in replacing them with composite fillings that match your surrounding teeth. You can’t undo the decay, but you can make the metal disappear.

Tooth Implants

A dental implant is a metal (usually titanium) rod implanted into the bone to replace the missing root after a tooth extraction. The crown and supporting structure are securely and permanently attached to the post. Titanium is super strong and well tolerated by the jaw bone. When the final crown is placed, your new tooth is indistinguishable from the others. Dental implants have many essential advantages over dental bridges or dentures. If you are missing teeth, schedule a consultation with Dr. Martin Buchheit to discuss your options.

Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS is located at 2149 Charbonier Rd. in Florissant. We have been providing quality dental care since 1987. In addition to the services previously mentioned, ask us about veneers, tooth whitening and sedation dentistry. We look forward to meeting you. Call us today at 314-837-7744.

Eruption Charts: Not As Scary As They Sound

teeth whitening Florissant

Hello St. Louis! Thanks for visiting the Florissant dental blog. Today we’re talking about eruption charts and what they are used for.

First, an eruption chart is simply a listing of the different types of teeth in the mouth and when, on average, they come out, or ‘erupt’, from the gums. A primary teeth eruption chart will also tell you when to expect the different teeth to be lost.

Dentists in the Chesterfield, Maryland Heights, and St. Charles area use these charts to compare the development of their patients’ teeth to the average times in the population.

Hi. I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit, an experienced Florissant family and cosmetic dentist. The friendly staff here at Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS would love to schedule an appointment with you and answer any questions you have about eruption times, children’s braces, dental sealants, athletic mouthguards as well as questions about teeth whitening and Chesterfield dental implants.

Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS is a full-service dental office. Some of the services we offer are:

dental implants
porcelain veneers
Invisalign
dental crowns
root canals
restorative dentistry

Give us a call today at 314-837-7744 and we can discuss these services as well as smile makeovers.

3 Tooth Problems Which May Require A Root Canal

St. Charles family dentist

Hello Missouri, let’s talk about the root canal procedure (“endodontic therapy” in dentist – speak). The root canal may be the most cringe-worthy dental treatment commonly done today, but it is important that dental patients in the Chesterfield, Maryland Heights, and St. Charles areas know what is happening during this anxiety-inducing, though routine, procedure.

At the center of each tooth is a very small tissue called the pulp. This thread-like tissue can become damaged due to

An injury to a tooth
A very deep cavity
A crack in the tooth

If this tissue becomes damaged or infected, it can build up at the root tip inside the jawbone and form an abscess. If left untreated, this can actually destroy the bone around the tooth and cause serious discomfort.

When an endodontist, oral surgeon, or general dentist in St. Louis or Florissant performs a root canal, the dead or diseased pulp is taken out, the space that is left is cleaned, and then it is shaped and filled. This eliminates the need for a diseased tooth to be pulled and continued cosmetic dentistry to fill in the gap.

Hi. I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit of Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS in Florissant. I hope that today’s St. Louis dental blog post has helped you to better understand root canals. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible and accurate dental information. I also want them to look their best, so if you have any questions about a smile makeover, dental implants, or teeth whitening, please give us a call at 314-837-7744.

At Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS we offer:

Dental implants
Porcelain veneers
Invisalign
Root canals

We hope to hear from you soon!

St. Louis Wants Silver Screen Smiles

St. Louis Wants Silver Screen Smiles

With the constant media coverage of celebrities, many Florissant dental patients are interested in having a smile like the stars. With an experienced dentist and the right smile makeover procedures, anyone can have a smile they want to show off.

Many smile makeovers include teeth whitening. There are a variety of ways this can be done. Most Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, and St. Charles drugstores sell over-the-counter whitening strips and gels. Your St. Louis dentist can recommend an effective one, or he or she may offer in-office bleaching. This is a quick way to see whiter teeth in less than an hour.

For missing teeth, most St. Louis cosmetic dentists will recommend a dental implant. Because a dental implant is anchored into the jawbone, it looks and feels just like a natural tooth. A dental implant prevents jawbone recession and the shifting of adjacent teeth.

Veneers are especially popular in the St. Louis area. They cover the front of the teeth and are custom-made for each individual patient. These are useful for Florissant patients who have broken or chipped teeth, stained teeth, or gaps between teeth that they would like to hide.

Enamel shaping, bonding, and braces are other successful treatments that can be used to help your teeth look their best.

I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit, a trusted Florissant dentist. If you are looking for quality dental care in the Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, or St. Charles area, I hope you’ll give us a call at 314-837-7744.

We offer dental implants, porcelain veneers, Invisalign, and root canals.

Florissant: 7 Surprising Causes Of Bad Breath

bad breath treatment St. Louis

Florissant men and women who have chronic bad breath understand the embarrassment and frustration associated with this condition. There are several possible causes, some that are often overlooked by our Florissant patients.

  1. Poor oral hygiene
  2. Digestive problems
  3. Systemic infection
  4. Bacteria on dentures
  5. Gum disease
  6. Food particles on tonsils
  7. Dry mouth

At Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS, we can help you with this unpleasant problem. If your bad breath is the result of poor oral hygiene, you’re in luck – this is one of the easiest types to treat. If you have visited our Florissant dental blog before, you know step one: make sure you brush for a full three minutes and floss before you climb into bed.

People who have no idea how long they brush can set a timer (there is probably one on your smartphone). In addition to cleaning tooth surfaces, scrub your tongue! Then take the time to carefully floss around each tooth to remove the plaque between your teeth and keep your gums healthy.

Some extra-careful Maryland Heights oral hygiene pros brush after each meal to prevent bacteria-causing food particles from sitting on their teeth during the day. In addition to freshening your breath, practicing proper oral hygiene will improve your health.

Schedule an examination and deep dental cleaning at Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS in Florissant. Our dental hygienists will get all the plaque and calculus off your teeth. During your examination, Dr. Martin Buchheit will determine whether you have a dental problem that is contributing to your breath.

Possible dental causes include a cavity, a broken crown, or gum disease. If Dr. Buchheit suspects that your bad breath is caused by a non-dental problem, such as a respiratory infection, you will be referred to an appropriate St. Louis area medical professional.

Treating bad breath in Florissant starts with a visit to Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS. In addition to general dental care, we provide a complete menu of cosmetic dental services including dental implants, root canals, and porcelain veneers. Call 314-837-7744 today!

Have Your Dessert, Florissant!

Have Your Dessert Florissant

Your St. Louis dentist knows that it’s too much to ask that you never indulge in sugary treats, but he or she will tell you that eating sweets at certain times is better for your teeth than others. For instance, when you eat a full meal, your saliva production increases. This helps to rinse food particles from your mouth as well as neutralize the acids that cause plaque.

This is great news for dessert lovers in the Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, and St. Charles areas because it means that sweets consumed after meals have a lower risk to your teeth because your mouth is already in optimum cleansing mode.

St. Louis dentists agree that sweets after meals are preferable to sweets eaten between meals as snacks.

Furthermore, remember that the type of treat is as vital as when you eat it. Florissant dentists are constantly reminding their dental patients that sticky candies stay on your teeth for a long time, even when your saliva is flowing. And hard candies that you suck for an extended time give bacteria a perfect environment to create harmful, enamel-weakening acids.

Live Better With Dental Implants In Florissant

Florissant Implant Dentistry Ill-fitting dentures can cause more problems for St. Louis denture wearers than they solve. If you live with loose dentures, you probably regard them as a necessary evil. Though they certainly look better than a toothless mouth, in practical terms they leave much to be desired because they affect two essential activities: eating and talking.

Unfortunately, many frustrated Hazelwood denture wearers have quit dining in restaurants or engaging in social activities because they are afraid their dentures will slip.

Implant dental procedures are allowing former denture wearers to re-engage in life.

Consider the advantages of implant anchored dentures:

-They are stable because the implant is anchored in the bone.

-Your denture is fixed; it will not move around in your mouth.

-They prevent bone loss that can occur when teeth are removed.

-They eliminate the necessity of regular denture relines.

-They do not irritate gums.

-No denture adhesive is required.

Florissant patients who have replaced their traditional dentures with implant overdentures enthusiastically say that the dental implant cost was more than worth it.

Do you want to eat normally again? What is the value of maintaining your facial shape? Can you put a price on confidence?

If you want more information about dental implants, call 314-837-7744 to schedule a consultation with Martin Buchheit. Koch Park Dental is located at 2149 Charbonier Rd. in Florissant. We have been providing advanced St. Louis dental care since 1987.
