The ADA: Promoting Dental Health Since 1859

American Dental Association Florissant

Hello, thank you for visiting the Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS blog. I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit. Along with my fantastic team, I have been providing trusted dental care since 1987.

Today’s message is about the American Dental Association. You have probably seen the ADA symbol on toothpaste and floss—but what else do you know about this dental institution?

The ADA’s self-proclaimed objective is to improve the level of public oral health by supporting the dental industry through not-for-profit federal, state, and local chapters. It was formed in 1859 and is run by its members, which currently total over 160,000.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is not an endorsement of a product per se, but rather is a confirmation of the claims made by said product. Companies who want the ADA credential for a product must submit proof of rigorous scientific testing. Once submitted, the ADA re-tests the product to further verify the results. There are currently over 300 products with the ADA certification.

The ADA does more than evaluate dental products. Here are some other ways the ADA works to carry out its mission:

  • Provides resources to support dentists and their practices
  • Educates the public about oral health
  • Works to expand access to dental care
  • Offers advice on critical issues that affect the dental industry
  • Works with other organizations on scientific research projects and public health initiatives
  • Offers scholarships to dental students

Time To Floss In St. Louis

Chesterfield Cosmetic Dentistry

Many residents of the Chesterfield, Maryland Heights, and St. Charles area are finding that they just don’t have time to floss and that it’s difficult to fit it into their daily schedule. If you’ve found this to be true, here are some ideas for when to fit this important dental health habit into your day.

  • The most common time is right before bed, but make sure your aren’t too tired to do a good job.
  • Right when you wake up is also an option, but if food is left between teeth all night, it has a chance to turn into plaque.
  • Try just after lunch, but before you go back to work.
  • Floss while you are in the car sitting in traffic. It’s easier one-handed with the pre-strung floss pics. (You might get some strange looks from other drivers, but it’s worth it.)
  • After you exercise – keep some floss in your gym bag.
  • While you’re watching the nightly news.

I hope this gives you some ideas to help you make flossing part of your daily routine. Flossing is essential for anyone in Florissant or St. Louis who wants to have a healthy smile.

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching St. Louis

Here at Koch Park Dental – Martin L. Buchheit, DDS we approach all your dental needs from two separate angles – what we can do in our Florissant office and what you can do at home. For example, tooth whitening and correcting discoloration can be treated in our office or at home. Here in the office there are safe and effective methods for lightening yellowed or stained tooth enamel. At-home whitening methods are also safe and effective and sometimes more affordable.

Additionally, we advise you regarding food and drink choices that can affect your whitened smile. Be aware of staining culprits such as coffee, tea, tobacco and harsh sodas. We understand that avoiding these items altogether is not an easy lifestyle change. Nor do we expect it.

Awareness and precaution can make a big difference. Rinsing your mouth out with water after drinking a dark or sugary drink can cut down on the contact your teeth have with such substances. Prolonged exposure to sugar can lead to buildup of plaque and tartar and prolonged exposure to staining substances can lead to stronger staining and discoloration.

St. Louis Wants Silver Screen Smiles

St. Louis Wants Silver Screen Smiles

With the constant media coverage of celebrities, many Florissant dental patients are interested in having a smile like the stars. With an experienced dentist and the right smile makeover procedures, anyone can have a smile they want to show off.

Many smile makeovers include teeth whitening. There are a variety of ways this can be done. Most Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, and St. Charles drugstores sell over-the-counter whitening strips and gels. Your St. Louis dentist can recommend an effective one, or he or she may offer in-office bleaching. This is a quick way to see whiter teeth in less than an hour.

For missing teeth, most St. Louis cosmetic dentists will recommend a dental implant. Because a dental implant is anchored into the jawbone, it looks and feels just like a natural tooth. A dental implant prevents jawbone recession and the shifting of adjacent teeth.

Veneers are especially popular in the St. Louis area. They cover the front of the teeth and are custom-made for each individual patient. These are useful for Florissant patients who have broken or chipped teeth, stained teeth, or gaps between teeth that they would like to hide.

Enamel shaping, bonding, and braces are other successful treatments that can be used to help your teeth look their best.

I’m Dr. Martin Buchheit, a trusted Florissant dentist. If you are looking for quality dental care in the Hazelwood, Maryland Heights, or St. Charles area, I hope you’ll give us a call at 314-837-7744.

We offer dental implants, porcelain veneers, Invisalign, and root canals.
